The difference between positive and negative charge


Atoms are made of three subatomic particles: neutrons, protons and electrons. Neutrons don’t have any charge in itself. Protons are carrying positive charge, and electrons are carrying a negative charge. We know, positive and negative charges are attracting each other, while positive-positive and negative-negative are repelling each other. But what is exactly the difference between positive and negative charge? What it means a positive or negative charge?

To understand this, we have to think outside the limitations of the words, language and symbols. Scientists gave terms ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ charges, and they gave it with reason. But at the end of the day, these are only terms, names and words. They could come up with some different ideas as well. But lets now just for a moment forget about the words ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ charge. Lets make it more simple. So, there are two types of charges. They just exist. Two types of charges. And that it is it. Very simple. Charges from the same type are repelling each other, and charges of different type are attracting each other. And that is it. Now, how we are going to call them, that doesn’t matter. (positive-negative, up-down, day-night.) … The name is not important. It is only important that two types of charges are existing.

Just like a man and woman. Man has a different charge than woman and they are attracting each other and they are creating chemistry. And we gave them names, ‘man’ and ‘woman’. Also we could give them different names, for example, instead of ‘man and woman’, we could call them ‘positive person and negative person’. That is not important. Only what is important is that there are two types of persons. In the same way, there are two types of charge.

What we call positive charge, we could also call it negative charge instead. Words are really not important. We have two different types of charges and we had to name them somehow.


  1. Like when any element loses its electron, it becomes positively charged ion. While the gain of an electron makes it a negative cation. I think that’s where the terminology comes from. But yes the concept is more important than the terms. Everything in Universe seems to have duality, but they are one and some, and are just complementary, as in case of man and a woman, or light or dark, anything. Both can’t exist without each other.
    This is actually a nice post. It made me remember various things fron school time and also what I learnt in recent years.

    1. actually that will be my next scientific post. About valence electrons. What you wrote is correct, but it is in different context. For example, atom has neutral charge, if it gains one electron, then it is positively charged ion, as you wrote…but whole atom becomes positively charged. And here we are talking about protons and electrons. both, protons and electrons are carrying a charge. But different types of charge. One proton has the same amount of charge as one electron, but of the different type. So we have two types of charges, and we decided to call them positive and negative.. but why? there is no why…we just had to name them somehow. and we could also name them vice versa.. like the other way around, it would make no difference.

      But yes, there is duality in whole Universe. When i wrote, i was also thinking about terms; masculine and feminine.. but i wanted to be more specific.
      yes, i also learned some things from my school, and I remember that I was actually enjoying this classes, but I never took any step further.
