Importance of reading the Bible

Couple of months ago I started reading The Bible from beginning to the end. Right now, I am on the book of Isaiah. Yes, I still didn’t read whole Bible because it is really a very long long book. Of course, I am born Catholic so I know the rest of the story, but never before I read the whole book. By reading Bible, I realized few things that are worth knowing and encouraging for you to also start reading this book. Here are my 12 reasons why reading a Bible is good thing.

1. IT IS A CHALLENGE

To read whole Bible, from first book to last book, is quite a challenge. It is not something that you can do in a week. In fact, I doubt that you can do it even in one month. It will probably take you few months of regular reading to finish the book. Does it sounds challenging? I think it does.

2. THE MOST KNOWN BOOK

Bible is definitely the most known book in the whole world. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones are all good books. Probably once in your lifetime you will read some of these big famous books. Bible is also one of those books. In fact, it is the most famous among all books.

3. IT IS FUN AND INTERESTING

Reading Bible is actually very fun and interesting. Sure, there are many boring parts and there are so many names that sometimes it is hard to read. Not even to mention that there are many things that are constantly repeating. But overall, you will see that Bible can be addictive as well, and sometimes you will be in hurry to grab your Bible to see what happens next.

4. IT IS HISTORY BOOK

Even if you are an atheist, this book is still a historical book and it has a great historical value. Any lover of history definitely needs to read Bible. It portrays history as it once was.

5. IT IS MYTHOLOGY/FANTASY BOOK

If you are into mythology/fantasy, Bible is definitely a book that you need to read. It doesn’t matter if you are taking it seriously or not, Bible is a good read for anyone who is in mythology/fantasy.

6. IT IS A PHILOSOPHY BOOK

Bible is quite philosophical. Any person that loves philosophy or loves to ponder on existential questions, this book will definitely satisfy your philosophical need and it will greatly play with your imagination and your thoughts. Definitely it will make you think.

7. IT IS POETRY

Bible is full of poetry. Full of many beautiful verses. If you are into poetry, or you are romantic person, Bible is a book for you. Sure, if you are soft and sensitive person, Bible can be really harsh, you will see. But that is exactly the beauty of Bible, because it is such a complex book. But anyway, it is full of poetic expressions that I am sure you will enjoy it.

8. IT IS FULL OF WISDOM

Bible is full of wisdom. By studying history or analyzing lives of great people, we can receive wisdom from those stories. The same thing is with Bible. It is historical book that is representing lives of many ordinary and great people. Plus, it has some very wise quotes and guidance for living.

9. IT IS A BOOK FOR WARRIORS

Bible is not all about poetry, philosophy, love and peace. In fact, you may find that there is much more violence in the book then there is love and peace. Bible is very violent book, and you can be disturbed if you are expecting that Bible is all about some romantic and loving fantasy. It is not. I mean, wars and violence has always been a part of our humanity. In fact, history is greatly created through wars and violence. Those times, from Old Testament, those were some crazy and wild times. Those were times that are very strange to us, modern people. We are not used to it. I am not saying that we should get used to it, no, definitely not. There is nothing good in war and in destroying, but the truth is, we all will face some adversity in our lives, and by reading Bible, we can see how many great people and warriors were facing adversity.

10. IT IS FICTIONAL BOOK

You may say, I don’t want to read Bible, I prefer fiction more. Well, Bible is a fiction. And by it, I don’t mean that it is made up, but it has a story, plot, characters. If you are into fiction, you will definitely like it.

11. FAITH

This one is tricky. Me personally, I am a believer, but I don’t like to force my beliefs on others. At the end of the day, I just know that I don’t know. But I like to have faith. It gives my life a meaning. And maybe, by reading Bible, you will find something deeper for yourself. This is all up to you.

12. DISCIPLINE AND SATISFACTION

Reading Bible from first to last page definitely requires a lot of discipline. You will see, at some parts of the book, you will be so bored and you will want to throw book away because it is boring. But at some parts, you will be so positively affected by the book that you won’t be able to stop reading it. However, discipline will lead to satisfaction. As you progress through book, you will see that your satisfaction deepens. It is a big project, to be quite honest, to read a whole Bible.

CONCLUSION

Bible, regardless of your religious beliefs, it is important book to read, in my opinion. I made this post so that you can see beauty and complexities of the Bible. It is really a wide book that has many aspects of literature in itself. If you don’t like it, at least you can say, I read that book and it is complete garbage. You will have an experience of it.

  1. The Bible is God’s love letter to you, me, and everyone who reads it. In addition, the Bible has substantially influenced virtually all of human history. As such, it’s not possible to claim to be educated or even educated about history without reading the Bible.

    1. I agree. Being born and raised as a Catholic, I know the story of Old Testament and New Testament, but never read the whole Bible. When I started reading it, first I was actually shocked how much violence there is, and my beliefs were shaken because I had different image in my mind. But as I kept reading it and I went through King David, Salomon, Psalms, Job and now as I finished reading Isaiah, and plus, knowing the story of Jesus, I can only say that I am just beginning to understand Bible, God’s revelation and reality as a whole. And, as you said, every person who considers himself/herself educated should probably read Bible regardless of their beliefs.
